It’s bittersweet as we reflect upon the 7 amazing years that the PEAK Performance Project has been running in British Columbia, thanks to the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group and their $5.2 million commitment to developing BC talent. 124 bands have benefited from participating in the project in BC, and countless lives have been changed by the process. However, as we say Goodbye, Alberta says Hello, to take the torch and continue the program for another 5 years.
This year the programs in both provinces run parallel but as separate contests. 12 artists were chosen from BC, and 12 from Alberta. All artists started with $5000 in development funding. Then together they descended on Rockridge Canyon in Princeton, BC for an intense seven-day boot camp. From there, each artist performed a critiqued showcase (in their home province) and carried out a number of career enhancing challenges and online voting that accumulated points for the adjudication committee. Each program chooses their top 3 artists, who perform at a Finale concert in Vancouver or Calgary, where they find out how they placed and who takes home the grand prize.
One of the key starting points for any recording artist is writing a great song. Songwriting is a skill that is constantly being developed. This year, we teamed up the artists from BC and Alberta with the challenge of writing a song to record at boot camp using the theme “Hello, Goodbye”. The artists worked with our amazing producers Russell Broom, Shawn Cole, Jeff Dawson, Josh Gwilliam, Nik Kozub, and Howard Redekopp, to come up with 12 original songs. All 12 songs were recorded in 5 pop-up studios built in a day at Rockridge Canyon. This could not be possible without the help of Nimbus School of Recording and Media (www.nimbusrecording.com) and their amazing crew: studio assistants Matt Beebe, Tanner Midkiff, Connor Head, Caleb Hardy, Jordain Culpepper, Stephanie Hodgins, Jana Bagasbas, and Audrey Arellano, and studio managers/engineers Nygel Asselin, Cody Taylor, and Elisa Pangsaeng.
