Team Cowpuncher - November 2014

Team Cowpuncher – November 2014

We’re back in the saddle baby! After months of a self-imposed exile to focus on writing we have made it to the other side with a new, fourth, album. It was recorded with our longtime engineer Josh Rob Gwilliam and his team at OCL Studios. We also brought in Derek Downham as our producer. A special thanks to Trevor Hatter for documenting the process and to Michael Bernard Fitzgerald for the celebration whiskey!

This project is still a long away from a full release but the recording is done and back to the point at hand: The band is ready to play shows again and we have a whole set of new material. Wanna hear it? We want to play it! If you’re in Calgary on December 23 that means you need to come to our first ever holiday special at the Republik. Cowpuncher presents Moonshine & Mistletoe!

It’s the holiday season. Shake and shiver and sweat through the night with your head held high at a rock and roll show featuring MANcub, JJ Shiplett and Cowpuncher.

December 23 2014. The Republik. One day before Christmas eve. Two days before Christmas. A proper start to the time you’ve taken. Celebrate and be merry! Rock and roll is an excellent gift!

Doors 8PM. $10 advance tickets via Sloth Records and BigTickets.

The two other bands on the bill are a couple of our personal favorite hometown heroes.

Mancub is the latest proof that Calgary is a musical polestar. The foursome’s blend of noise infused garage rock shows their willingness to experiment with sounds but that loud, layered riffs and pulsating drums is their main vein. Mixing artistic noise adds weightlessness to their stark rock roots.

JJ Shiplett
Canadiana roots rockin’ red head. Also from Calgary. A songwriter in every situation and a dedicated player, JJ’s passion for quality music and sincere songs, is only matched by his goal to get everyone dancing.

The only other show we have prior to Moonshine & Mistletoe is The Legion in Jasper on November 28.

Ghost Notes Album

Ghost Notes Album

We just found out that Ghost Notes won Best Album Design at the Western Canadian Music Awards!

The packaging features a cover with Matt caked in river flood mud, and an inside sleeve with the rest of the band also entombed in the mud. The tailend of our Bridesmaids video actually shows part of the process that went into making those photos.

Geoffrey Hanson has been our primary artist and designer from the start with the Brown Album, Call Me When You’re Single, the Hooscow 7″, our logo, numerous shirts and posters, and of course, Ghost Notes. We’re excited to see him get these accolades!

But we’re not surprised. One of the projects he worked on for the Alabama Shakes was up for a Grammy in 2012. The Calgary Herald did a profile on him recently (Robert Plant, Kings of Leon are just a couple of musicians Calgary designer has worked with).

Thanks and kudos Geoff!

It’s fitting that Calgary has been dusted with a fresh layer of snow as we begin a self-imposed exile to focus on writing. After months of planning we will be returning to the studio in October to begin a new album. In the meantime our Nov 2013 release ‘Ghost Notes’ is no longer a free preview on Exclaim!’s website. We’ve uploaded a full stream here to tide folks over.

Our final day of recording is scheduled for October 30. We’ll be celebrating with a tight-as-nails Halloween show at Fratters Speakeasy in Red Deer. See y’all in a few with bells on!

We’ve been off the radar writing songs and preparing to record a new album in October.

Over the weekend we played at Beaverfest in Valleyview. A special thanks to Darty from Chron Goblin for doing a standup job standing in on baritone!

Here in our home town of Calgary the downtown core has been transformed for cowboy halloween (Stampede)!

Most of the events will be private functions but there are a couple of shows open to the public this Sunday.

In the afternoon we’ll be playing the Rock Central Stampede Breakfast Revival Patio Party at Broken City. And in the evening we’ll be rockin’ out at The Palomino with our pals Coal Creek Boys and Bluessmyth!

It’s been a busy week. We drove for a whole day last Friday to perform at Dauphin’s Countryfest in Manitoba on the Saturday. It was a rainy muddy one. But lots of music fans were willing to get dirty and party with us! Sadly the whole Sunday, which we weren’t playing, had to be cancelled and evacuated due to storms. Further, it felt like a trail of destruction followed us as we came home. Spots in Regina, Melville and the highway got flooded and washed out hours after we passed through those areas.

We also had a near death experience. Driving to the lodge after our last show on Saturday night it was dark, wet and slow going through a forest. Normally you can catch a deer’s eyes reflecting on the side of the road with the brights on. However a moose was standing in our lane with it’s head turned and and we barely managed to get out of the way when we saw it at the last possible second. That’s some scary stuff! We count our blessings and have been lucky to have had only a few close calls. Usually in winter blizzards. Stay safe out there traveling bands.

On Monday we played at the Alberta Legislature for the province’s Canada Day celebration. Maybe it’s time we got into politics?

This week we’ll be all over Calgary. Wednesday night at Wine-Ohs (11:30PM) and then Sunday in Haultian Park (3PM) for SLED Island.

We will also be closing down the Saturday night Bridgeland re-localization FAIR (10:30PM).

We’ll be heading to Lethbridge this weekend to play at Scores in support of a massive dodgeball tournament afterparty. Shields up!

LA Beat did an interview with M’Olah to preempt the event:

“Two guys tried to take on the whole bar and my face got caught in the middle of it. It wasn’t much of a fight for me, it was me falling into a wall from the punch and getting back up and having it all happen again,” he described.

But Canadian Music Week wasn’t all pain, it was gain too as they sold out one of their two shows and recruited The Beauties drummer Derek Downham to produce their next album.

“We’ve been focusing on writing now. We got a grant and have to have eight songs done by January,” he said.

They have four songs completed which they will play in Lethbridge.

Read the rest here.

Next week we will be performing Monday at the Big Rock Eddies awards show and then we have a couple of shows for SLED Island. Wednesday at 1130PM we’re at Wine-Ohs. And we’ll be playing the festival close-down pig roast in Haultain Park on Sunday afternoon.

Our shows directory has been updated with our Stampede listings. Come rock and roll with us!
